It was Carlton Television's producers who put Morse at the wheel of a 1960 Jaguar Mk.II. They obviously came to the view that it was the kind of car that would have been driven by the Oxford educated, crossword, opera and real ale loving detective. It seemed the perfect car, although John Thaw, who played Morse, did once admit that it 'was a beggar to drive'. But like it or not, the Regency Red 2.4 became as much a symbol of the series as the imposing spires of Oxford itself. Indeed, the car has been described as 'the most recognisable Jaguar Mk.II in the world'.
